Dhoni was born in Ranchi, Bihar and belongs to a Hindu Rajput family with its roots in Uttarakhand. He is the youngest of three children of Paan Singh and Devki Devi. His native village Lawali is in Jubilee tehsil of Lamgra block of Almora district of Uttarakhand. His parents migrated from Uttarakhand to Ranchi, Jharkhand, where his father worked as a pump operator in a junior management position at MECON Colony, located in Doranda area of Ranchi.
